Selecting Fields for Integrative Studies

Build your own major to create a customized educational experience.

As an Integrative Studies major, you have the opportunity to custom tailor the major to fit your unique educational and career goals by selecting three fields of study. The strength of this major comes from integrating areas that support your interests, skills and future goals. With this in mind, we encourage you to choose your fields with intentionality. In other words, what three fields will best help you reach your goals? What knowledge and skills do you need to develop?

Here are several combinations which students have chosen:

  • Psychology, Biology & Rehabilitation and Health Services
  • Communication Studies, Business & Economics
  • Psychology, Business & Kinesiology, Health Promotions and Recreation
  • Economics, Business & International Studies
  • Economics, Business & Merchandising and Hospitality Management
  • Communication Studies, Business & Journalism
  • Political Science, Philosophy & English
  • Communication Studies, Business & Rehabilitation and Health Services
  • Sociology, Business & Information
  • History, English & Philosophy
  • Sociology, Business & Administration and Social Services
  • English, Journalism & Business
  • Political Science, Communication & Business
  • Communication Studies, Business & Merchandising and Hospitality Management

Some of the departments have courses with quite a bit of prerequisites or have limited options available to students outside of the major. Go to the RESOURCES Tab to find helpful handouts on these departments.

You could also use an Undergraduate Academic Certificate as a field of study. There are many academic certificates available.

Select the 3 major fields from the following list with at least one in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences:

Note: Students are responsible for following all course prerequisites. You may have to take additional hours to be eligible to enroll in courses.

College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Fields

Advertising, Aerospace Studies, Anthropology, Arabic; Chinese; Communication Studies; Dance; Economics; English; French; Geography/Geology; German; History; International Studies; Italian; Japanese; Journalism; Latin; Latino & Latin American Studies; Military Science; Philosophy; Political Science; Psychology; Sociology; Spanish; Technical Communication; Theatre; and Women's & Gender Studies.

G.Brint Ryan College of Business

Departments within the College of Business are combined to complete only one 12 hour field.

Divisions in the College of Business Administration: Accounting; Aviation Logistics; Business Computer Information Systems; Business Law; Decision Sciences; Finance; Insurance; Logistics & Chain Supply Mgmt; Management; Marketing; Real Estate; and Risk Mgmt & Insurance.

College of Education Fields

Note: Some departments within the College of Education require admission to the College.

Counseling and Human Development & Family Studies; Kinesiology, Health Behavior & Fitness, and Recreation & Sports Management; Teacher Education (can include Bilingual and English as a Second Language, Educational Curriculum and Instruction, Early Childhood, Elementary Education, Reading and Secondary Education, and Special Education).

College of Engineering Fields

Departments within Engineering are combined to complete only one 12 hour field.

Biomedical Engineering; Computer Engineering; Computer Science; Construction Engineering Technology; Electrical Engineering; Information Technology; Materials Science and Engineering; Mechanical and Energy Engineering; and Mechanical Engineering Technology.

College of Information Fields

Departments within Information are combined to complete only one 12 hour field.

Learning Technologies; Linguistics; and Information Sciences.

College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism Fields

Departments within Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism are combined to complete only one 12 hour field.

Divisions in the College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism: Consumer Experience Management, Digital Retailing; Event Design and Experience Management; Home Furnishings; Hospitality Management; Merchandising; Merchandising, Hospitality & Tourism.

College of Music Fields

Note: Some Music courses require registration codes, auditions or have other restrictions.

Departments within Music are combined to complete only one 12 hour field.

Ethnomusicology; General Music; Music Audio Enginerring; Music History & Literature; Music Career & Enreprenuership.

College of Health and Public Service Fields

Administration & Social Services; Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology; Criminal Justice; and Rehabilitation and Health Services.

College of Science Fields

Biology; Biochemistry; Chemistry; Interdisciplinary Program in Analytics & Computational Science; Mathematics; and Physics.

College of Visual Arts and Design Fields

Departments within Visual Arts are combined to complete only one 12 hour field.

Divisions in the College of Visual Arts & Design: Art History; Ceramics; Drawing & Painting; Fibers; Interdisciplinary Art and Design; Metalsmithing & Jewelry; New Media Art; Photography; Printmaking; and Sculpture.
